Welcome to Week 7 of the Flower Market Sew Along, where we will be making Flower 7. This is a great way to complete this quilt top. We will be showing you step by step photos. There is also a video at the end of this tutorial with more Flower 7 instructions.
The quilt measures 62″ x 74″. You will need a Fat Quarter bundle of Daisy Mae, 4 1/4 yards of white Country Confetti, 3/4 yards of binding and the Flower Market Pattern. All of these are available through your favorite quilt shop. You can also see everything you will need on our website here.
The first thing you will want to do is organize, cut and label all your pieces for Flower 7. Please note the following correction. The instructions on page 11 are correct. The correct measurement for b is 2″ x 8 1/2″. The cutting instructions on page 3 are not correct. It should read:
From (1) color cut:
- 4 ½” x 8 ½” rectangle
From (1) color cut:
- 2 x 8 ½” rectangle
From (1) color cut:
- 1 ¾” x 8 ½” rectangle
Note to self: if you spray starch all your fabric before cutting you will be thrilled with the final look of your block.
Sew all your strips together. Note the last color matches the stem and is at the bottom of the flower head. Use the stitch and flip method to place all your squares in each corner. I like to do the opposite corners first. Trim leaving a 1/4″ seam allowance. Press to the outside.
Sew the remaining 2 corners. Trim leaving a 1/4″ seam allowance. Press to the outside. Set your flower head aside.
Make the leaf sections by using the stitch and flip method. Sew the squares to opposite corners. Trim leaving a 1/4″ seam allowance. Press to the outside. You will make 1 left leaf and 1 right leaf. Sew the sections together to complete the left section. Sew the sections together to complete the right section. Sew the left section with right sides together with the stem. Press toward the stem. Sew the right section with right sides together with the opposite side of the stem. Press toward the stem. Sew the bottom of the flower to the top of the flower to complete flower 7.
