Welcome to Week 2 of the Flower Market Sew Along, where we will be making Flower 2. This is a great way to complete this quilt top. We will be showing you step by step photos. There is also a video at the end of this tutorial with more Flower 2 instructions.
The quilt measures 62″ x 74″. You will need a Fat Quarter bundle of Daisy Mae, 4 1/4 yards of white Country Confetti, 3/4 yards of binding and the Flower Market Pattern. All of these are available through your favorite quilt shop. You can also see everything you will need on our website here.
The first thing you will want to do is cut out all your pieces for Flower 2. Label them as you go so you will know what sizes you have.
Draw or press a line from corner to corner on your small squares that you will be placing in the corners of your flower block. You are creating a snowball. The most important thing is to make sure you have the correct color on each corner of your snowball. Sew a background color square on the outside corners and on each inside corner sew a pink square. There will also be two blocks with the navy blue squares. This creates the continuation of the stem into a navy blue triangle. You will make 4 snowball blocks. Be sure to place the right color in the right corner.
Sew all your squares to each corner of your flower square to create a snowball, then trim 1/4″ away from your sewing line. Press. Sew the snowballs together to create the top part of your flower. Notice the placement of the colors to create the flower center and the extension of the flower stem.
Note to self: when sewing the snowballs together match the diagonal line on the corner triangles. Place a pin 1/4″ from the outside edge. Sew.
Next you will prepare to sew the leaves. You will be creating 4 leaf units. You will make a left leaf unit and a right leaf unit using the stitch and flip method. Make sure you are careful to place the 2″ squares in one corner and the 1 1/2″ squares in the opposite corner. Trim 1/4″ away from stitched line. Press.
Place background rectangles and left leaf sections on one side. Place background rectangles and right leaf sections on the other side. Sew together. Press.
Sew left leaf section to stem. Press toward stem. Sew right leaf section to other side of stem. Press toward stem.
Sew the flower 2 to leaf type 2 to complete your flower.
