Flower Market Sew Along for Flower 5

Flower Market Sew Along for Flower 5

Welcome to Week 5 of the Flower Market Sew Along, where we will be making Flower 5. This is a great way to complete this quilt top. We will be showing you step by step photos. There is also a video at the end of this tutorial with more Flower 5 instructions.

The quilt measures 62″ x 74″. You will need a Fat Quarter bundle of Daisy Mae, 4 1/4 yards of white Country Confetti, 3/4 yards of binding and the Flower Market Pattern. All of these are available through your favorite quilt shop. You can also see everything you will need on our website here.

The first thing to do is organize, cut and label all your pieces for Flower 5. Note to self: if you spray starch all your fabric before cutting you will be thrilled with the final look of your block.

We want to make the 4 flying geese units. Be sure to make 1 pink and 3 white background units. The pink flying geese is a continuation of the stem and needs to be the stem color. Sew your first square using the stitch and flip method.

Trim leaving a 1/4″ seam allowance. Press to the outside.Sew the other square from corner to corner. Trim leaving a 1/4″ seam allowance. Press to the outside. You will have 4 flying geese units for each flower.

Sew the center of the flower together making sure you keep the center color contrasting to your outside fabrics. Note to self: The written instructions are correct. Cut (2) 1 3/4″ x 4 1/2″ for each flower. The diagram shows a different measurement and is incorrect.

Press all seams to the outside.

Sew your flying geese units and squares to the center block.

Sew a square to opposite sides of 2 flying geese units. Sew the remaining 2 flying geese units to the center block. Sandwich seams together. One seam goes one way and the other seam goes in the opposite direction. This will help with the bulk of your seams.

Make the leaves by using the stitch and flip method. Press or draw a line corner to corner to create your diagonal line. This line is the line you will sew on. Trim. Press. Sew the leaf sections together.

Sew one side to the stem. Press. Sew the other side to the stem. Press. Note: I like to press the seams toward the stem.
